Harley-davidson Road King (1999–2020): what actually fails

Twin Cam cam chain tensioner shoe wear

Twin Cam 88 Road Kings use spring-loaded cam chain tensioners whose plastic shoes grind away and contaminate the oil system, often taking the inner cam bearings with them. Shoes need inspection every 15,000-25,000 miles — ask to see records. The lasting fix is the hydraulic conversion or gear drive; receipts or budget $900-1,500.

BEFORE YOU BUY
Ask for repair records covering this item. If it hasn't been addressed and the car is in or near the mileage window, price the $500–$1,500 repair into your offer — or make it the seller's problem.
2007–2013 TYPICAL 0k–80k MI UP TO $600

Excessive engine heat (rear cylinder)

Twin Cam 96/103 touring bikes of this era run hot enough in traffic that H-D recalled 2009-2012 models (11V-506) for heat-killed brake-light switches. Idle the bike in place during your inspection and gauge rear-cylinder heat at your leg. Verify the recall is closed; tuners and oil coolers are common owner mitigations.

ABS front brake failure from old fluid (recall 18V-076)

ABS-equipped Road Kings are covered by recall 18V-076: old DOT 4 fluid corrodes ABS valves and can cause total front brake loss. The flush is free at dealers but must recur every two years. Confirm recall completion and ask for brake-service receipts.

2017–2018 TYPICAL 0k–60k MI UP TO $400

Clutch master cylinder failure (recall 18V-734)

The FLHR is named in recall 18V-734: the clutch master cylinder may not fully disengage the clutch, which is dangerous coming to a stop. The fix is free at H-D dealers. Run the VIN and confirm the recall is closed.

2017–2020 TYPICAL 0k–45k MI $400–$900

M8 oil pump wet sumping

Early Milwaukee-Eight engines can wet-sump: oil collects in the crankcase, power drops on the highway, and oil pushes out the breather into the air cleaner. H-D addressed it with service bulletin M-1450 and revised oil pumps. Check the air filter for oil residue and ask for receipts showing the updated pump.
