Ford Explorer (2002–2019): what actually fails

The documented failure patterns on used Ford Explorers — the mileage window where each shows up, and what the repair typically costs at an independent shop. This is the same data NoLemon's Brief checks against every VIN.

2011–2019 TYPICAL 80k–160k MI $2,000–$4,000

Internal water pump failure (3.5 V6)

The water pump lives inside the engine, driven by the timing chain — when it leaks, coolant can dump into the oil and take the engine with it. Milky oil or unexplained coolant loss is a walk-away. The repair is engine-out labor, which is why it costs what it costs.

Ask for repair records covering this item. If it hasn't been addressed and the car is in or near the mileage window, price the $2,000–$4,000 repair into your offer — or make it the seller's problem.
2011–2017 TYPICAL 20k–140k MI $200–$1,500

Exhaust odor in cabin

Thousands of complaints about exhaust smell entering the cabin under load, especially with A/C on recirculate. Ford issued multiple TSBs; police fleets made headlines over it. Smell for it on a hard highway pull during the test drive.

2002–2005 TYPICAL 90k–180k MI $1,800–$3,200

Transmission failure (5R55)

The 5R55 in these Explorers is notorious for solenoid-pack and band failures — flaring shifts and a slipping O/D are the early signs. At this age, records or a recent rebuild matter more than the odometer.
