Honda VTX1800 (2002–2008): what actually fails

The documented failure patterns on used Honda VTX1800s — the mileage window where each shows up, and what the repair typically costs at an independent shop. This is the same data NoLemon's Brief checks against every VIN.

Front-end wobble on deceleration (steering-head bearings)

Like the VTX1300, these shake their bars while decelerating around 35-50 mph, especially with a loose grip; NHTSA complaints call it a major wobble. Test-ride through that speed range and feel for oscillation. Tapered steering-head bearings are the community-standard fix — ask for the receipt.

Rear drive-flange bearing failure

Same weak point as the VTX1300 but worse under the 1800's torque: NHTSA complaints describe the flange bearing destroyed by 11,000-30,000 miles, sometimes repeatedly. Have the rear wheel pulled or ask for proof the bearing was replaced and the drive splines greased at each tire change. Owners who service it every tire change avoid the expensive flange and hub damage.
