Balancer chain adjuster ('doohickey') failure

The KLR's balancer-chain adjuster lever — famously called the 'doohickey' — is a weak stamped part that can crack, and its spring can fail; if it lets go, the loose balancer chain can tear up the engine. Decades of owner-forum consensus say to install the improved aftermarket lever and torsion spring, especially on pre-2008 bikes. Ask for a receipt showing the doohickey was done; if it wasn't, budget the job into your offer.
