V6 oil cooler hose rupture (sudden oil loss)

A rubber section of the engine oil cooler line bursts without warning and dumps the oil — engines driven on empty are destroyed. Toyota's fix is an updated all-metal line: look for the metal pipe near the oil filter or ask for the service record. Water pump leaks are the other common failure on this V6, so check the coolant too.
