Electric power steering failure

The electric power steering can quit without warning — a "Service Power Steering" message and a suddenly heavy wheel, often ending in a new steering rack. On the test drive watch for that warning, stiff spots, or jolts while turning; any stored steering code on a scan is disqualifying.

2014–2016 TYPICAL 0k–160k MI UP TO $8,000

EcoDiesel EGR cooler & CP4 fuel pump (recalls)

The 3.0 diesel drew recalls for EGR coolers that can crack and cause fires, and for a fuel pump (CP4) that can shred and spread metal through the whole fuel system — an out-of-recall pump failure can run into the thousands. Confirm both recalls are complete by VIN. Long cranks or a rough, rattly idle on this diesel is a walk-away.

Hemi exhaust manifold bolt breakage (tick)

5.7 Hemi exhaust manifold bolts snap, causing an exhaust tick at cold start that fades as the engine warms; the fix is extracting the broken bolts and resealing the manifold. A tick that stays when warm may be a failing lifter instead — a much bigger job — so have any ticking Hemi inspected before you buy.
