Cam chain tensioner rattle
A rattly automatic cam chain tensioner is the SV650's most common mechanical complaint on owner forums. Listen for a metallic rattle from the front cylinder at cold idle that fades as revs rise. A new tensioner is cheap insurance; a rattle ignored for years risks cam chain and valve damage.

Regulator/rectifier failure
Regulator/rectifier failure is a classic Suzuki weakness of this era, and the SV650 is the poster child on owner forums — Suzuki even recalled the same part on sister models. A failing unit overheats and stops charging: dimming lights, hard starts, then a dead bike. Check for about 14 volts at the battery at 5,000 rpm; an upgraded MOSFET regulator with receipts is the fixed-right outcome.
