Final drive bearing failure
The rear final drive's crown bearing wears until the wheel develops play; ignored, it can seize. On the center stand, rock the rear wheel at 6 and 12 o'clock and feel for movement, and look for gear oil weeping around the hub. A bearing/seal rebuild runs about $800-1,000; a replacement drive can hit $2,500. Receipts for a rebuilt final drive are a strong plus.

Fuel pump flange cracks and leaks
The plastic fuel pump flange on the tank cracks with age and ethanol fuel and dumps gas onto the hot engine — BMW recalled it twice (NHTSA 13V617000 and 21V060000). Sniff for fuel and look for staining around the pump flange under the tank. Run the VIN for open recalls; the dealer fix is free, but complaints show some repaired flanges cracked again years later.

Fuel level strip sensor failure
The in-tank fuel level strip fails, so the gauge reads wrong or the low-fuel warning stays on. BMW treated it as a known defect and replaced strips under goodwill for years; NHTSA complaints describe strips replaced three times. Check that the gauge tracks a full tank down and ask whether the strip was ever replaced.

Front fork tube separation (recall)
The fixed fork tube can separate from its pressed-in lower plug — this caused crashes and led BMW to recall 2014-2017 water-cooled GS models (17V438000). Run the VIN and get proof the recall was performed before buying. Oil weeping at the lower fork joint is a walk-away until it is fixed; the dealer repair is free.
