Tesla Model X (2016–2021): what actually fails

The documented failure patterns on used Tesla Model Xs — the mileage window where each shows up, and what the repair typically costs at an independent shop. This is the same data NoLemon's Brief checks against every VIN.

Falcon-wing door faults

The rear falcon-wing doors misalign, stop half-open, or fail to latch as their sensors and actuators age. Cycle both rear doors several times, including in a tight parking spot, and watch for hesitation or error messages. Repairs run hundreds to thousands per door, so any glitch needs to be priced in.

Suspension link / control arm failure

Front suspension links and ball joints fail on these heavy SUVs, sometimes letting a wheel lean in or the nose drop suddenly. Listen for clunks over bumps and check the front tires for uneven inner-edge wear. A shop inspection of all the links, plus records of updated arms, settles it.

12V battery sudden death — car won't wake or open

Model X uses a small lead-acid 12V battery that powers the doors, screens, and computer. It often fails suddenly with no warning, leaving the car dead — the falcon-wing and front doors may not open and the car won't drive, even with a full main battery. At the viewing, ask when the 12V was last changed and look for a '12V battery needs service' message. Replacement runs about $200-$500 at Tesla; the battery itself is under $150.
